Muscle Disease

Find out how we can help with Muscle Disease

Myopathies can range from the common exercise induced rhabdomyolysis (tying up) to rare genetic mutations and life threating atypical myopathies (sycamore poisoning). Investigating myopathies usually involves examination of the horse at walk and exercise with pre and post exercise bloods, genetic testing and muscle biopsies.

We work closely with the RVC neuromuscular laboratory who examine our muscle biopsies and perform the genetic testing.

Horses suffering from atypical myopathy usually require specialised care in the hospital for which our intensive care unit is designed for.
