Stallion Services

Here you can find more detail on the services we offer for Stallions

Stallion Health Tests

These tests are necessary for veneral diseases control and to optimise the reproductive efficiency of the stud farms. A lot of the carriers of these diseases do not show any symptoms.

  • Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM)
  • Klebsiella pneumoniae
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Equine Viral Artritis (EVA)
  • Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA)

We conduct these using a combination of swabs and blood testing.

Semen Collection for fresh / chilled semen

Semen can be shipped overnight, arriving anywhere in the UK within 24 hours. The collection process involves presenting the stallion to a teasing mare, leading to mounting a dummy. Once mounted, the penis is inserted into an artificial vagina until ejaculation.

After the collection, the semen is evaluated and processed. We also arrange semen shipment of the semen with an overnight courier.

Freezing Semen

Freezing equine semen offers a multitude of benefits for breeders:

  1. Preservation: Preserve the genetic material of your prized stallion for future breeding seasons.
  2.  Flexibility: Plan your breeding program with greater flexibility, utilizing frozen semen when it's most convenient for you and your mares.
  3. Long-Term Viability: Properly stored frozen semen can remain viable for many years, allowing breeders to use it for future generations or in the event of unforeseen circumstances affecting the stallion's fertility.
  4. Storage Facility: Store your frozen equine semen conveniently at our premises. Our secure storage ensures the integrity and viability of your genetic material.
  5. Year-round Availability: Whether it's peak breeding season or off-season, we offer our freezing equine semen service to meet your needs.
  6. UK Eligibility: Our frozen semen is eligible for use in the UK, meeting all necessary regulatory standards.

Dummy training

The stallions are trained to mount a phantom (“dummy”), mostly to avoid injuries to the mares, stallions, or handlers. As the stallions mounts the dummy, the veterinary surgeon has easy access to position the artificial vagina.

In addition, the dummy is adjustable in height and angle, maximizing the stallion’s comfort, especially in the ones that have back pain or lameness.

Training the stallion to mount the phantom can be quick and easy, done in only a few sessions. Sometimes it can be more challenging, and more sessions are needed to train a stallion.

However, an average 2 to 5 sessions suffice for novice stallions.

Semen Evaluation and Longevity Trial

The main goal of this evaluation is to determine the viability and concentration of the semen. This is done by motility, morphology, and concentration.

The longevity trial evaluates how the chilled semen can maintain acceptable motility. The semen will be evaluated immediately after collection, and at 24h and 48h.

The semen is exposed to different extenders to determine which works best for a certain stallion.

Stallion Breeding Soundness Examination

This consists of doing a:

  • Physical examination
  • Testing for venereal diseases
  • Evaluation of external and internal genitalia, including palpation and ultrasound evaluation of testicles and accessory sex glands
  • Semen evaluation
  • Cooling and longevity trial using different extenders
  • Estimation of daily sperm output
