Andrew Crawford - Hospital Clinical Director
Andrew Crawford BVetMed Cert ES (Orth) DipECVS MRCVS Hospital Clinical Director

European Specialist in Equine Surgery & RCVS Registered Specialist in Equine Surgery

Andy grew up in rural Northern Ireland and moved to the South East of England to study at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), London. After graduating in 2002 he joined the Sussex Equine Hospital as its first Intern where he discovered his passion for surgery. After completing the internship he worked as an ambulatory vet in the south of the practice for 5 years.

Wanting to pursue a career in equine surgery he returned to the RVC in 2008 for a three year residency. Here he gained the RCVS Certificate in Equine Orthopaedic Surgery and played a role in teaching students and interns. Alongside honing his surgical skills he worked with an esteemed team developing stem cell therapy in horses, contributing to their published journal articles. He published further research on equine orthopaedics and co-authored a chapter in a textbook on this subject. He has subsequently lectured at conferences both internationally and within the UK.

Andy is now a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons and an RCVS Registered Specialist in Equine Surgery.

He returned to the Sussex Equine Hospital in 2011 as the first completely hospital-based surgeon, where he provided a referral service to the ambulatory team and the local equine practices.

He has trained numerous interns and more recently began a training program for surgical residents.

Andy works now predominantly as an orthopaedic surgeon, operating on more complicated cases, and seeing horses with 'difficult to resolve lameness’. He also works on the general surgery service out of hours.

He has grown this referral service and is now the hospital director heading a team of 4 interns, 1 resident, 4 surgeons and 1 internal medic.

Andy became a director of the company in 2015 and has been part of the exciting development and the move of the hospital to Ashington, where he continues to grow the services the hospital can offer.

In his spare time Andy is a keen triathlete. He can often be seen out running with his training partner Max, the springer spaniel.
