American, European and RCVS Specialist in Equine Surgery

Ellen graduated from Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1987, spent 3 years in equine ambulatory practice in the northwest of the USA, prior to completing a surgical residency and Doctor of Veterinary Science Degree at the Ontario Veterinary College (Canada). Ellen joined the Faculty of Veterinary Science at Liverpool in 1995, remaining a core part of the orthopaedic and surgical team at Leahurst until 2018. During her time at the University of Liverpool, Ellen was proud to be involved in clinical and research training of budding equine surgeons, many of whom are now successful surgeons in the UK and abroad. Since 2018, Ellen has worked at various practices as a consultant surgeon and orthopaedic clinician. Recently, Ellen has joined Sussex Equine Hospital as part of the surgical and hospital team. Ellen is looking forward to working in a new geographic area and to providing support to veterinary surgeons through case consultations and referrals.

Ellen is recognised nationally and internationally for her clinical expertise in orthopaedics and surgery. She is a Diplomat of the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Surgery and a Royal College Specialist in Equine Surgery.  Her main areas of clinical interest are diagnosis and surgery related to equine orthopaedic conditions with a hidden passion for equine colic surgery. Ellen is a keen fan of Three Day Eventing and National Hunt Racing, having worked for many years as part of the veterinary team at the Aintree Grand National. She looks forward to joining the SEH teams at the local racecourses.

Ellen is passionate about education, and as such has been involved in the organisation and delivery of many continuing education courses for BEVA and the RCVS Certificate programme. She has been recognised for her contribution to through the awarding of a Fellowship of the RCVS for Meritorious Contributions to Clinical Practice.

Ellen spends the majority of her free time outdoors in various ways: riding her event horse, running, cycling, and when possible, travelling to the mountains – for hiking, skiing and climbing. When stuck indoors, a good novel is always nearby. Living closer to London, Ellen is looking forward to taking advantage of the cultural richness the city has to offer.
